Google April Fools
What Google is up to, as of April 1, 2008...

In the cut...Collapse )

A few more (along with previous years' April Fools) are conveniently listed in a Wikipedia article. I wonder what they'll do next year...

BSOD screen saver
Something I found while Wikipedia surfing recently: an official MS Blue Screen of Death screen saver! Made by Mark Russinovich of Sysinternals, for Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, and Server 2003, it displays a very real-looking NT/XP-style BSOD, followed by a simulated reboot (with the appropriate startup screen), followed by another (different) BSOD, and another reboot, and so on. The blue screens are generated from your computer's system info. You press any key to exit this screen saver; moving the mouse does nothing. :-)

I think I've found my April Fool's joke for this year... *big, devilish grin*

In 2008, aaron_of_mpls resolves to...
Give up roadgeeking.
Take ranka reading.
Spend more time with my early humans.
Tell my family about cats.
Connect with my inner evolution.
Give some highways to charity.

Twin Cities, MinneSNOWta... :-)
It's been below freezing for more than a week now, and we got about 5 or 6 inches (about 12-15 cm) of snow here yesterday (Saturday 12/1). At least it came at the right time this year; we've had some relatively wussy winters recently. The NWS is forecasting around equal chances of above- or below-average precipitation this winter here (though a bigger chance of above-average temperatures), so hopefully we won't get either too much snow or not enough.

I'm hoping for some cold, clear weather in January and February -- I kind of like it when it's -5°F and sunny that time of year. :-)

Aspie Quiz
Swiped from ogam, the Aspie Quiz...

Guess which side of the spectrum I'm on... :-)Collapse )

Little surprise there. I think I should've scored a little bit Aspie-er, though, as I may have read too much into some questions.

Ben Franklin vs. slavery
I was Wikipedia surfing tonight, and ended up at (among other things) the article on Benjamin Franklin. Ben Franklin opposed slavery later in his life, and one of the last things he wrote before his death was a letter to the editor of the Federal Gazette in 1790, satirizing the most popular arguments in favor of slavery and the slave trade. I remember reading about it several months ago in a book about Franklin (among other places), and I wanted to find the full text somewhere. A Google search for the letter found it quoted in someone's blog, and a link to the source, the Benjamin Franklin Papers online.

The pro-slavery arguments (boo!), and a link to Franklin's satire (yay!)Collapse )

I enjoy intellectual excursions like these, even when they keep me away from other things I want to do. :-)

Calm lake pics
A post in songdogmi's journal inspired this. He posted a "calm lake" pic (for those needing calm), and I started thinking of some of the pics I've taken.

Lake Auburn; Victoria, Minnesota, USA; July 22, 2004. The lake was smooth as glass that morning.
More pics in the cut...Collapse )

Hopefully some of the calm from these pics will be passed on to those reading this.

What's new with me...
It's been a while since I've posted; I've been busy with school and work, and I've been spending my internet time elsewhere (particularly on Second Life -- you may notice I got around to adding that to my interests). So what's new? Well...

School, work, family, car trouble, weather... (a bit long)Collapse )

Finally, a quote I found in someone's Yahoo profile tonight:
Naked ≠ sex, but it is nice when it happens that way! ...
Nudity = Freedom = Naked
Given my warm-weather clothing preferences, you can see why I posted this. :-)
